In addition to my role as a collaborative practice neutral financial professional, I work with lawyers and mediators and their clients. As a Chartered Financial Divorce Specialist and Chartered Professional Accountant, I can assist lawyers or mediators in several ways:
- Neutrally assist one spouse to prepare their financial disclosure documents.
- Neutrally assist both spouses to prepare a joint NFP and their income disclosures. Any areas of continued disagreement would be noted for your resolution.
- Neutrally review each spouse’s submissions and claims documents for all financial elements and synthesize and summarize to identify all financial issues for the mediation.
- Calculate child support and ranges of spousal support using Divorcemate as applicable.
- Calculate the proportionate share of income for use in Section 7 expense sharing.
- Assist spouses in detangling financially:
- Separate their cards, accounts and transactions on a go-forward basis; and
- Review comingled transactions since separation, reconcile and report on an adjustment to date; and
- With input from the facts encountered, draft for review and approval the terms of an interim financial agreement for the shared expenses and interim support if any for use until the separation agreement is finalized.
- If one or both spouses feel they are at a knowledge disadvantage, assist one or both spouses to better understand their family financial situations and implications which improves their financial decision-making and confidence when it comes to settlement discussions.
- Assist in developing financial settlement options applicable to the circumstances.
- Using AFDS proprietary software, prepare long-term cash-flow and net-wealth forecast analysis of proposed financial solutions, including illustrating potential long-term consequences, to assess solution durability. All assumptions will be reviewed in advance and documented.
- Any other financial detail work requested by the lawyer or mediator.
Ideally, I am retained at the outset of the mediation for the best outcomes. For this work, I can be retained as a sub-contractor directly, or retained by the clients.
